Understanding peptide purity

What a 99%+ purity figure actually measures, how HPLC determines it, and why mass-spec identity confirmation belongs alongside every purity number.

Purity is the most cited figure in research peptides — and one of the most misread. Knowing exactly what the percentage represents lets you evaluate material against its documentation with a critical eye.

What the percentage measures

Purity is typically reported by HPLC as the target peptide's share of the total detected peak area. A reported 99%+ result means related impurities — truncated sequences, deletions, and other by-products of synthesis — make up less than one percent of what that method detected. Review material-specific lot documentation when available rather than assuming one catalog-wide result.

Purity is not identity

A sample can be highly pure and still not be the compound you expect — purity and identity are different questions. Mass spectrometry answers identity by confirming the measured mass matches the target sequence. A complete COA reports both, which is why identity confirmation belongs alongside any purity figure.
